French painter, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841 – 1919) was a leader of the Impressionist movement. Unlike many Impressionist painters of this period, he preferred to paint his friends and family, capturing candid, “of-the-moment” scenes. In his famous oil on canvas, Luncheon of the Boating Party (Le déjeuner des canotiers) (1881), Renoir paints himself and his friends on the balcony at the restaurant, Maison Fournaise. The technique used in this painting is emblematic of Renoir’s use of color, light and composition to bring about the intimacy and vitality of his works.
